The Grave

The burial and the tomb

Assistens Churchyard

Saturday 9. October 2010 at aproximately 12 o'clock the grand funeral procession arrived at the final destination:

The grave, a dug hole in the consecrated ground of Assistens Churchyard on Nørrebro in Copenhagen. Here the priest Erik Bastian Bock performed the burial ritual and the coffin containing the remains of Claus Beck-Nielsen, identities and the state citizen was lowered into the grave. A few hours later, when the last members of the procession community had left, the gravediggers filled up and closed the grave upon the coffin.

Three days later, on Tuesday 12 October, the gravestone was raised on the tomb.

Assistens Churchyard is a municipal cemetery and so the consecrated ground is open to citizens of and beyond all religions and races. Our random victim Claus Beck-Nielsen was baptized into Christianity and will leave the world through the Christian burial ritual, but his death, burial and tomb is the death, burial and tomb of all (human, national, racial, religious etc.) identities and the concept of the state citizen.
